Scout earns his wings
Cole Hanson, 13, an eighth-grader at Blach Intermediate School, earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He received the designation in a recent Court of Honor ceremony.
For his Eagle project, Cole redesigned and re-equipped a children’s study area in a shelter for homeless families in San Francisco. He was able to do more than he originally planned with support from the community. Los Altos’ local summer swim team, the Covington Critters – of which Cole is a member – allowed him to sell concessions at a swim meet, forgoing some of the team’s profit to help him raise more than $250. He also held a bake sale at Heritage Oaks Park last summer, with dozens of local moms baking and donating the goods, and again raised more than $250.
“It was an amazing thing to watch the community rally around him and a great testament to the strength of this town,” said Cole’s mother, Tabitha. “His project and all the planning that went into it were fantastic, but it was a gift to me as a mother to watch my son experience first-hand the strength of community and for him to see how many adults in the greater community were willing to support him and his efforts to do good.”
