The Los Altos Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is launching its annual American History Contest.

Local students in grades five through 12 can enter either a video or written essay, competing to win a medal, certificate and cash prize. Entry deadline is Oct. 30.

This year, students in grades five through eight are asked to put themselves in the shoes of early Americans hearing the Declaration of Independence read aloud for the first time. Participants are asked to consider the community impact of these words and ideals.

Student contest participants in grades nine through 12 must choose a figure from the Revolutionary War and showcase how that person contributed to the county’s founding.
