HS Track & Field: Local athletes speeding toward record times, championships

South Santa Cruz County had to say goodbye to a handful of talented and decorated stars at the conclusion of last spring, but the holdovers have unflinchingly stepped into their vacated shoes and provided plenty of excitement through the first month of the season.

Weekly roundup, 3/29: E.J. Kelly named CCS Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Kelly and Wong were selected from a pool of 16 finalists — each pair representing one of the eight leagues from around the CCS — based upon their success on the field and in the classroom, as well as their impact in their community.

All-Pajaronian Soccer Team, 2019: Watsonville stars Elyanna Magdaleno, Ricardo Alvarado named area’s top soccer players

For the first time since the 2011-12 season, Watsonville’s boys’ and girls’ teams both finished the year with a league championship — the two programs also earned the top seed in their respective division of the Central Coast Section playoffs. And Magdaleno and Alvarado each a had big hand in their team’s success.

JC Baseball: Seahawks put it all together in win over Lobos

The Seahawks put all the ingredients together and dominated Thursday’s contest against the Monterey Peninsula College Lobos at the Hawks’ Nest, 4-1.

Damion Lee scored a team-high 28 points, Kendrick Nunn chipped in 18 points off the bench and the Santa Cruz Warriors clinched the Pacific division title with a 120-116 win over the Capital City Go-Go on Wednesday in Santa Cruz.

All-Pajaronian Basketball Team, 2019: Pajaro Valley’s star scorers Christian Quintero, Jayleen Solorzano named area’s top players

Quintero carried the boys’ team to its first-ever Central Coast Section quarterfinals berth, and also earned league M.V.P. honors. Solorzano, meanwhile, powered the girls’ squad to its first-ever winning season and league championship, while also being named the M.V.P. in her respective league.

Girls' SCCAL basketball: Grieves named Coach of the Year

With Grieves at the helm, Aptos pieced together a 23-7 overall record, won a share of the SCCAL crown and captured the Central Coast Section Division III championship for the second time in three years.
